We are energetic beings that give and receive energy from one another. Sometimes we need to protect ourselves against the anxious, negative, or other forms of energy from others that can end up affecting our mental health.
Below are a few tips to aid in not taking on the energy of others:
Ask yourself, “Is this symptom or emotion mine or someone else’s?”
A tip-off that you’re absorbing someone’s energy is to notice if you experience a sudden change of mood or physical state around that person. Most likely, if you didn’t feel anxious, depressed, exhausted, or sick before, the discomfort is at least partially coming from the other person.
Limit physical contact. Hugs are a choice!
Energy transfers through the eyes and touch. If you’re uncomfortable with someone, limit eye contact and touch, including hugs and hand-holding. Though hugging a loved one in distress often benefits you both, if you are wary of taking on their stress, make the hug short. You can keep sending them love from a distance. You have a choice about the kind of physical contact you participate in.
Detox in water
A quick way to dissolve stress and empathic pains is to immerse yourself in water. Water is vey cleansing! Epsom salt baths are divine and also provide magnesium, which is calming.
If you can't immerse yourself in water, try washing your hands or face!
Spend time in nature and practice ‘Earthing’
Being in a fresh, clean, green environment or around water clears negativity. Try lying in a meadow and soaking up its energy in your entire body. Earthing means going barefoot and feeling the earth through your feet. To shed other people’s energies, feel the grass between your bare toes, walk in the sand or the soil.
Unplug:
Turn down the noise!
Honor your need to detach from your environment from time to time. Limit your use of technology, and create quiet time for yourself. Immerse yourself in nature. No matter what, make time for yourself.

Starting something new is scary! Change is hard, even if it is positive change. Also, it can be extremely difficult to talk to a stranger about the things that we are struggling with.
During your first mindfulness based psychotherapy appointment, your therapist will conduct an intake. Will your therapist ask some invasive and difficult questions? Yes. Will they make it as painless as possible? Also yes!
What to expect - Your therapist will start by going over their role in the therapeutic process and what is expected of patients. They will go over your rights as a patient and make sure you understand the paperwork you filled out/signed (AKA the boring stuff).
Then you and your therapist will spend some time getting to know each other. Your therapist will want to know about what you are struggling with, but also wants to know about what you are passionate about, who your support system is, and what you like to do in your spare time.
Unfortunately, we do have to go over you current symptoms and struggles. However, we then discuss your strengths and goals for therapy.
Lastly, you and your therapist will decide if we are truly a good fit for one another and hopefully schedule your next appointment.
Still feeling nervous? Shoot us a message and we can schedule a time to talk on the phone to get your questions answered : )
